Branding – don’t let your emails bring you down

October 3, 2011 in Business Blog

Whilst this may not be an entirely Social Media related post, it’s nonetheless important for you to remember that branding is everywhere in your company. It’s a circular concept that encompasses everything from the way you answer the phone, to the articles you post on Facebook.

As marketing turns from professional to personal, we’re allowed to replace ‘Dear’ with ‘Hi’ in our emails, allowed to be a little funky and add an exclamation mark if we so please (although, I never really advise this, it’s allowed), we can end our emails telling the client to have a ‘great’ day, rather than a ‘good’ day – it does not mean that we’re allowed to forgo everything we’ve learnt about grammar and spelling.

It’s quick and simple to hit’ ‘reply,’ type ‘Yes, the meeting is at 10, see you there.,’ and hit ‘send.’ Surely, it’s great branding if your client gets a response instantly, rather than waiting twenty minutes for you to edit it?

No, because what you really wrote was: “Ye, the meetnig* is at 100, c you three,’  or something on either side of the absurd scale. You look like a nincompoop and your company follows suit. It takes ten seconds to read before you send – it’s not worth the risk.

I received an email this morning, from a woman whose first language is in English and yet I couldn’t understand a word.

I won’t be dealing with that woman again, would you?

*I asked someone to edit this post and they tried to edit this spelling ;)
